Hello!
Welcome to the last newsletter of 2025! Good news: I'm not doing any sort of recap, wrap-up, or summary of the year, this is just a regular newsletter. And apologies to the nation of Finland: for some inexplicable reason I got you confused with Sweden in last week's newsletter. I've fixed it for the web version.
In this week's Lateral!
Michelle Wong, along with Bill Sunderland and Dani Siller from Escape this Podcast, take on questions about Soviet spats, spot situations and spoiled science.
Straight into the good
stuff from the world of video, then:
- Bright Sun Travels visits the dated, tired Circus Circus hotel in Las Vegas. "Our Uber driver, no word of a lie, literally started laughing at us for going
there. But how bad could this really all be?" Fans of liminal spaces will enjoy parts of this video.
- From Flightradar24, which I thought was just an app that tracks planes but is in fact also making YouTube videos: on the flight deck
to the most remote Atlantic island. This is a trip to St Helena, with its legendarily-difficult landing. This does assume a bit of technical knowledge (it could really use some narration or even on-screen text to explain things like ETOPS and windshear), and they really need a good microphone! But the footage is worth the watch.
- Comedian Paul Scheer talks to fifty dads at Taylor Swift's Eras Tour. I know, I didn't think it was my sort of video either, but this is heartwarming, and if you'd like something that's just nice in the dark days between Christmas and New Year, I can recommend watching this. (As a heads up, this video is clean, but the rest of the channel is a high-profanity podcast that I
haven't checked through!)
And around the rest of the web:
- A duct-tape typographer has been honoured with a design award: "Over the years, a cultish appreciation has grown for Shuetsu Sato’s work with fans dubbing his clean-line, rounded edge typography as Shuetsu-tai (Shuetsu font)"
- Farewell to the Stansted people-mover: was it a gadgetbahn, or just a relic of the past?
- And Australian animal news! A koala has been rescued from a Brisbane city bus after a death-defying dash.
And finally, on TikTok: The Winner Takes It All, but in 9/8 time. (Alternate link for desktop.)
All the best,
— Tom
