Hello!
In this week's video, it's time to run through every mistake I've made since 2014! Every mistake I've made in my main-channel videos, anyway. I'm sure there's plenty of other things I can regret, but I'd rather not think about those right now.
In this week's video, it's time to run through every mistake I've made since 2014! Every mistake I've made in my main-channel videos, anyway. I'm sure there's plenty of other things I can regret, but I'd rather not think about those right now.
Plus! Over on Lateral, Toby Hendy, Matthew Schuchman and Julian O'Shea face questions about celebrity stars, film foul-ups and security systems.
Elsewhere
in the world of video this week:
- I couldn't make it to the rail replacement helicopter in Switzerland, but happily I tipped off the Tim Traveller, and he could!
- The BBC Archive have been putting a lot of old clips up on YouTube (in 50fps! Like they should be!), and this one stood out: kids' magazine show Blue Peter explains how their own television studio works, live on air, while broadcasting from it. The
rehearsal that must have gone into this! And if you're wondering where I got my presenting style from... it's at least partly from the later incarnations of shows like this. (Thanks to Michelle for sending this over!)
- Circuit
is a dark comedy, sorta-sci-fi short film (strong language, suicide) about an electrician trapped in a room. I cannot see the joins in the compositing here: I can only assume they had multiple perfectly-aligned rooms and cameras in a row. (Thanks to Jon for sending this over!)
- Off the back of that, I discovered Omeleto, a YouTube channel that has managed to make short-film fiction work on YouTube... by clickbaiting it. (Many videos not suitable for all ages.) No short, arty titles here: instead you get a potted plot summary in the title of the video itself, like it's any other regular vlog. That feels very strange, and I'm not sure I like it, but then medium has always influenced message and if it's getting short-film art out to the world, perhaps I shouldn't complain.
And around the rest of the web:
- Minnesota is running a competition for their new state flag. They got
more than 2,000 entries, and depending on your definition, here are either the worst or the best.
- The Thanksgiving Rider, which starts funny and grows increasingly tragic (strong language, family issues, existential dread).
- Fortunately, the cabin crew noticed the missing windows before the plane got to cruising altitude.
And finally: it has now been 53 years since the Exploding Whale.
Next week: a video I've wanted to film for years!
All the best,
— Tom
