A big tunnel! a big fight! and a big train!

Heads up! This newsletter is more than a year old. Links may be out of date or lead to unexpected places, or the context may have changed. Please handle with care.
Hello!
There were a lot of possible titles for this week's video. "How much does it cost in fuel to attach a camera to your car?" "Inside the secretive test track under a British hill." But I went with something realistic: this is just an excuse to show you a good tunnel. (I might test some of the other titles later.)

But I went with something realistic: this is just an excuse to show you a good tunnel. (I might test some of the other titles later.)
And of course, we're go for Lateral as well! It's all about crooked camel competitions this week, as Bill Sunderland and Dani Siller (from 'Escape This Podcast') and Amelie Brodeur face questions about colour-coded
kindness, curious keypads and cosmic kit.
What other good video have I found this week? Well:
- I've never understood why someone would take up boxing — head and brain injuries terrify me — but Michelle Khare, whose entire channel
is about setting ludicrous physical and mental challenges for herself, tells the story of her big fight. This is a professional documentary, with a story that's very well told, and it's worth setting aside time for.
- I've
discovered Will Edmond, travel vlogger, who's great at taking the audience along for a ride: in this case, on a train to the Grand Canyon!
- This tour round an advanced vehicle recycling facility is fascinating: cars are stripped, dismantled, and their parts catalogued for resale in hours. Now, I'm not sure the Late Brake Show have been clear enough in their advertising disclosure here (were they paid by eBay? I don't know?) and this does fall into 'puff piece' sometimes: but it's still a fascinating video from an infrastructure
point of view.
- Longboard dancing! Good choice to start the video off with the failures: it makes the successes look that much more impressive.
Other interesting links I've found this week:
- I'd never heard of a Sheep-to-Shawl contest, which starts with wool still on a sheep and must end with a
fully-woven shawl. "You have 5 people, 1 sheep, and 3 hours — good luck". There's video at the bottom of the page.
- Sega had a giant arcade in London for many years, and many folks my age have fond memories of it. The "Sega World London Memoriam" Twitter account, with old photos and videos, brought back a lot of Segaworld nostalgia for me. I do worry about things like this being catalogued on something as flaky and ephemeral as Twitter, though.
- If someone happened to mention, in conversation, that they were eating while slightly upside-down in order to train their guts to avoid acid reflux, I'd assume they were talking rubbish. But put that as a paper on PubMed and suddenly it sounds really authoritative.
And finally: I was reminded this week of the video for A1's cover of Take on Me, which may be one of the most year-2000 things ever made. I honestly can't tell whether this was all in earnest or all in parody, and I suspect it's the former.
All the best,
— Tom
