You Against The World

No studio. No fancy equipment. No competent host.

Contestant Dom takes on a live studio audience - and the world, via a live web stream - in a quiz show where he could win the prize of his dreams. Or at least, whatever You Against The World's tiny budget could afford.

With thanks to

Co-hosting by Melinda Seckington.

Dom for being a fantastic contestant.

Filmed at BarCamp London 8 at City University, London; with thanks to Kate Reader, Alistair MacDonald, and the teams at City University and BarCamp London.

Behind the scenes

All the in-studio software is written in HTML5 running in Google Chrome; one laptop pushed data to three screens simultaneously. Mel had the behind-the-scenes information and game controls; the projector had all the audience-facing graphics; and the iPad I was holding handled tweets, the time spent on each question, and other game data that could be difficult to calculate under pressure.

The statistics and tweets in the video aren't made up: this was actually streamed live to the web via uStream. (Don't believe me? There's a discussion thread at Bother's Bar, combined with the Million Pound Drop which was on at around the same time.)

This edited version adds sound, music, and better graphics. It also cuts out the occasional technical glitch and gaffe.

And just for the avoidance of doubt: I know Dom, and I've worked with him on many projects before, but he was most definitely not a stooge that evening – he didn't even know the categories he'd be facing, let alone the questions!
